Puerto Rico: Popular former senator Mercedes Otero dies




Former Secretary of Corrections and former senator from the Popula Democratic Party Mercedes Otero de Ramos died this morning, as confirmed by the Secretary of State Kenneth McClintock.
"The former senator, and former administrator of Correction Mercedes Otero de Ramos died this morning. Our condolences to her family," McClintock wrote in his Twitter account to declare three days of mourning for the death of the former senator.
"The governor just tell me that, as the interim, I declared three days of mourning for the death of former senator Mercedes Otero de Ramos ... so we ordered that flags be flown at half mast today through Friday in his memory. May he rest in peace, "said the Secretary.

Otero de Ramos was manager for year periods of correction in the 1992 under the government of Rafael Hernandez Colon, and from 1993 to 2000 she was elected senator from the Popular Democratic Party.
In recent days spread information related to the critical condition of Otero, who was detained in the Teacher's Hospital after being operated on emergency last Friday to attend an inflammation detected near the stomach.
In March 2011, the House of Representatives honored the 75 women who have occupied seats in the Legislature of Puerto Rico, in a special session. Otero de Ramos came in a wheelchair.(read in Spanish)
